Obesity is a major public health and economic problem of global significance, and is of grave concern in the Asia-Pacific region, where there is a genetic predisposition to metabolic abnormalities leading to central adiposity. Coincident with the high rates of central obesity in these areas, the prevalence of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cancer, fatty liver disease, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) is also escalating.
